Hammers set for a return to Europa League action

SC Freiburg v West Ham United – UEFA Europa League round of sixteen first leg – Stadion am Wolfswinkel – Thursday (8pm) – Preview

West Ham United resume their EUEFA Europa League programme on Thursday evening with a first-leg tie against old adversaries SC Freiburg at the Stadion am Wolfswinkel in south-west Germany.

The East Londoners have already crossed paths with their German counterparts during the group stages of the competition, with the Hammers winning the away ties by the odd goal in three in October 2023, before recording a 2-0 victory at the London Stadium just over two months later.

Indeed, Wst Ham’s triumph in Germany set a new record for consecutive unbeaten European fixtures for an English club which stretched seventeen matches – Lucas Paquetá’ and Nayef Aguerd with the all-important goals.

David Moyes will be without Maxwel Cornet due to a hamstring injury. However, the Scotsman is likely to shuffle the pack following back-to-back Premier League victories over Brentford and Everton. Meanwhile, Freiburg are missing the injured Daniel-Kofi Kyereh, Max Rosenfelder, Lukas Kübler and Kenneth Schmidt.

Their Bundesliga opponents are currently ninth in their domestic division and are without a victory in their last five, but played out an exciting 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich last time out, with Christian Gunter and Lucas Holer on target for the home side.

Jeevesie’s prediction: SC Freiburg 1-1 West Ham United
