Hannant strikes as U’s topple Town

Ipswich Town v Colchester United – Carabao Cup first-round – Portman Road – Report

Ipswich Town 0-1 Colchester United

Like Hannant’s first-half goal handed battling Colchester United a shock Carabao Cup first-round victory over Ipswich Town on a dramatic night at Portman Road

Wayne Brown made four changes to his starting line-up following the U’s 1-1 League Two draw with Carlisle United at the weekend. Unsurprisingly, coming up against an Ipswich team amongst League One promotion favourites, the North Essex side came under heavy early pressure.

U’s stopper, Sam Hornby saved from Greg Leigh, while Junior Tchamadeu did remarkably well to head clear Rekeem Harper’s delightful centre.

Ipswich continued to dominate. Cameron Humphreys blazed over from fifteen yards after Kyle Edwards had picked him out from the right. But just before the half-hour mark and with their first meaningful foray forward, Colchester took the lead. Hannant rifled high beyond Vaclav Hladky in the Ipswich goal after Harper had carelessly presented him with the opportunity.

Humphreys was again horribly off-target as the stunned home side looked for an immediate response. Harper also found the back of the stand shortly after the restart, while Horby shovelled out Sone Aluko’s free-kick. The Ipswich pressure was incessant.

Frustrated Town boss, Kieran McKenna, had seen enough and made a quartet of changes, replacing Kane Vincent-Young, Harper, Aluko and Kayden Jackson with Wes Burns, Lee Evans, Marcus Harness and Conor Chaplin. The latter went close with a spectacular bicycle kick as the clock continued to run down.

But while the Colchester players manfully stuck to their tasks, the home side simply ran out of time. Hornby comfortably fielded a desperate late strike from Evans. Ipswich were booed off by the vast majority amongst the 11,654-strong audience, while those that had travelled up the A12 celebrated a notable triumph over their local rivals.
