Happy Hammers turn it around

Everton v West Ham United – Goodison Park – Premier League – Report

Everton 1-3 West Ham United

West Ham United recorded back-to-back Premier League victories after staging a stunning recovery to claim all three points against struggling Everton at Goodison Park.

Having overseen his first win in nine earlier in the week, David Moyes was looking forward to returning to Everton, where he carved a solid reputation as a Premier League manager.

“They gave me a start and the chance to make mistakes. We grew the club, and I hope people will look back and think we did well,” the Scotsman explained.

“The biggest thing I took from my time there was the players. We had brilliant players, who were brilliant to work with. I have great memories of that place, and I’m looking forward to going back tomorrow.

“Losing the points must have been a huge disappointment, but I couldn’t tell you what that’s like because I haven’t experienced it. I’m sure they’ll be well up for the game tomorrow.”

The highlight of a windswept and wet first half proved to be a terrific penalty save from West Ham keeper Alphonse Areola.

The Frenchman denied Beto from the spot after VAR had picked out a handling offence from Kurt Zouma.

But Beto made amends after the restart, heading home James Garner’s centre, much to the delight of the Merseyside crowd.

But Zouma was to play a pivotal role in the fightback, firing into the top corner of the net just after the hour after James Ward-Prowse had fashioned an opening.

With a draw looking the most likely outcome, West Ham struck twice in stoppage time to sink the Toffees. Tomas Soucek brilliantly turned the contest on its head following good work from Mohammed Kudus. Then Edson Álvarez calmly added a third to send the East Londoners’ support into raptures.
