Simon Harmer continued to control proceedings as Essex honed in on quickfire LV=Insurance County Championship Division One victory over Hampshire at the Cloud County Ground.

In a game that has evolved at a rate of knots, Essex has given themselves two days to find the ten wickets required for victory, while Hampshire needs 264 runs on a track seemingly suiting the bowlers.

Harmer took eight of Hampshire’s first innings wickets for 46 as the visitors, responding to Essex’s 238 – Shane Snater (71), Tom Westley (46) – were dismissed for 163. 

Ben Brown and Nick Gubbins showed some resistance, scoring 38 and 34 respectively before both fell to Harmer. Nevertheless, Liam Dawson did his utmost to replicate Harmer. The Hampshire spinner claimed seven for 68 during Essex’s second stint in the middle, taking his match figures to 10/139. Harmer and Adam Rossington rescued the hosts with the bat, scoring 61 and 60 respectively as Hants were set 299.

At the close, the visitors were 35 without loss. Felix Organ (23*) and Ian Holland (12*). Play resumes on Tuesday at 11am.
