Simon Harmer made short work of Derbyshire’s batsmen as Essex took a firm grip of their LV Insurance County Championship encounter at Chelmsford.
Again, Essex progress was hampered by the weather. The first day had been washed out and although centuries from Dan Lawrence and Tom Westley helped the home side to a sizable 412/3d, the rain returned to frustratingly hold up proceedings before Harmer struck devastatingly.
The off-break bowler finished with career-best figures on 9/80 as Derbyshire were skittled for 146. Brooke Guest offered some form of resistance with 49 off 116 balls before the visitors’ were forced to follow on.
Luis Reece was knocked over by Jamie Porter in off the penultimate delivery of the third over. However, Guest (56*) skipper, Billy Godleman (39*), bad light and rain held up the Essex charge and set up a fascinating final day. Play will resume on Sunday at 11am.
