London Fire Brigade has declared a major incident after a number of fires across London on the hottest day on record.

A major blaze in Wennington, Rainham, burned fields and put homes at risk.

One man, who was digging a trench around his property to protect it from the flames was rescued by police.

Andrew Blake-Herbert, Havering Council chief executive, released a statement this evening saying: “We are working hard to help London Fire Brigade respond to a large fire in Wennington, Rainham. Staff are on the ground to help local people. A rest centre is being opened to help any residents who are unable to go to family or friends’ homes.

“We need people to avoid the Wennington area if at all possible and need local people to keep doors and windows closed to protect from smoke and ash.”
