Dover Athletic v Southend United Vanarama National League – Crabble Athletic Ground – Report
Dover Athletic 0-1 Southend United
Noor Husin’s goal midway through the second half extended in-form Southend United’s unbeaten Vanarama National League sequence to six matches as Kevin Maher’s men overcame struggling Dover Athletic at the Crabble Athletic Ground.
Blues had to be patient against a Dover side that had recorded their first league victory of the season during the week.
Maher handed Husin a start, while striker, Callum Powell – recruited on Friday from Kettering Town – was named amongst the substitutes.
Frontman, Matthew Dennis recover sufficiently from a troublesome hamstring injury to provide the Blues boss with a boost. However, the home side – thirty points adrift ahead of kick-off – remained resolute, and indeed went close through Harry Ransom and Michael Gyasi during a tense opening period.
But Southend are made of sterner stuff these days. Husin – signed from Dartford a little over a week ago – fired home seventeen minutes from time, this after Sam Dalby’s header had been cleared off the line.
Blues survived a late scare when Koby Arthur’s effort came back off the inside of an upright. But it’s now four wins from six for the Roots Hall Stadium outfit who move up to sixteenth place as a result.
Southend United return to Vanrama National League action on Tuesday, February 1 when Barnet visit Roots Hall Stadium (7:45pm).
