Impressive Blues too strong for Glovers

Southend United v Yeovil Town – Vanarama National League – Roots Hall Stadium – Report

Southend United 2-1 Yeovil Town

Improving Southend United extended their unbeaten Vanarama National League sequence to three matches as Yeovil Town were brushed aside far easier than the 2-1 scoreline suggested.

Kevin Maher stuck with the starting eleven from Saturday’s single-goal success at Weymouth, with recent signings, Leon Davies and Ollie Kensdale handed a place on the bench

Sam Dalby was unable to profit after Yeovil stopper, Grant Smith miss-kicked, while in-form frontman, Matt Dennis drove into Smith’s midriff as the home side started brightly.

Smith snaffled Rhys Murphy’s long-range attempt at the second attempt. But shortly before the half-hour mark, the keeper found himself fishing the ball out of the net after Jason Demetriou’s deflected strike looped into the net. It was no more than Southend deserved.

Murphy hit an upright, while Smith used his legs to thwart the same player as Southend – buoyed by the goal – flexed their muscles during a dominant opening period.

Dalby should have done better, nodding directly at Smith immediately after the restart. Meanwhile, Murphy’s curling effort was a whisker away as the Blues continued to press.

Southend were worth a second goal and it arrived on the hour. Dennis powered his way forward from deep before picking out Tom Clifford at the far post – the full-back on hand to bag his first goal of the season.

Luke Wilkinson’s dead-ball attempt was easily fielded by Steve Arnold as Yeovil finally provided a threat of their own. Indeed, only a remarkable one-handed save from Arnold from substitute, Joe Quigley preserved the Blues priceless advantage.

Quigley’s effort was ruled out for off-side. However, the Somerset side pulled one back two minutes from time. Ruben Reid profiting from an uncharacteristic error from Arnold.

But Yeovil’s fruitless flurry came far too late to influence what had otherwise been an impressive display from Maher’s men. Blues moved seven points clear of the dropzone as a result.

Southend United now turn their attention to the Buildbase FA Trophy where they face Dagenham & Redbridge at the Chigwell Construction Stadium on Saturday, January 15 (3pm).
