Essex head into the final day of their Bob Willis Trophy encounter with Surrey in a strong position after setting the visitors a mammoth 337 to win on what was a sweltering day in at Chelmsford.
Sir Alastair Cook scored 42 for the second time in the match, while Paul Walter hit 46 as the home side turned the screw – Adam Finch took 4/38 and Amar Virdi 4/85 as Essex were dismissed for 262.
Simon Harmer trapped Surrey skipper, Mark Stoneman to bring the days’ play to its conclusion. The dismissal was Harmer’s seventh on the match and left the visitors facing a huge task to save the match.
Earlier, the impressive Feroze Khushi and Adam Wheater both passed fifty for Essex, while former England skipper Cook chipped in with 42 as Essex posted a first-innings total of 262.
Hamer and Jaime Porter then hindered the visitors’67 response – the former taking 6/67 and the Leytonstone-born Porter 4/54, handing Essex a useful lead of 75 at the halfway point. Play resumes on Tuesday at 11am.
