Impressive O’s a match for Hammers

Leyton Orient v West Ham United – Breyer Group Stadium – Friendly Match – Report

Leyton Orient 0-0 West Ham United

Leyton Orient and West Ham United stepped up their preparations ahead of the forthcoming campaign by playing out a competitive goalless draw at the Breyer Group Stadium.

With further lockdown restrictions now lifted, Orient was able to welcome back 2,000 fans to E10. Armstrong Oko-Flex forced Lawrence Vigouroux into a routine save after Michail Antonio had fashioned an opening for the former Celtic youngster, while Angelo Oggbonna nodded wide as the Hammers created the better of the early opportunities.

Darren Randolph was forced to hack clear as Paul Smyth lurked. Meanwhile, former Hammer, Dan Kemp was twice snubbed out as Orient swiftly found their feet and threatened menacingly.

West Ham had a narrow escape when Harrison Ashby hooked off the line from the busy Smyth. Indeed, the impressive Orient had more than matched their traditional local rivals throughout the opening period.

O’s skipper Darren Pratley was wayward shortly after the restart as genuine chances continued to arrive at a premium. Nevertheless, substitute goalkeeper Sam Sargeant produced a superb save low to his right, denying Xande Silva after Mark Noble and Ben Johnson had created from the flank.

Irish frontman, Aaron Drinan tried his luck from distance as Orient – winning a number of the physical battles – pressed higher up the pitch. However, Sargent again had to be on his toes – this time grasping Antonio’s diving header at the second attempt.

Leyton Orient continues their pre-season build-up with a visit from Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, July 17 (3pm). Meanwhile, West Ham United will face Reading at the Madejski Stadium on Wednesday 21 (7pm).
