Impressive Witham stun Rovers in league opener

Great Wakering Rovers 2-3 Witham Town

Steve Butterworth was honest with his assessment after witnessing his Great Wakering Rovers side slip to a 3-2 opening day Pitching In Isthmian League North defeat at the hands of Witham Town at Burroughs Park.

Ben Search gave Witham the lead shortly after the half-hour mark. And despite Mitchell Gilbey restoring parity six minutes later, Chinedu Osadebe restored the visitors lead shortly before the interval.

Osadebe bagged his second of the afternoon just before the hour. Martin Tuohy responded, but it was a case of too little too late for the villagers.

“Fair play to Witham,” Butterworth told Yellow Sport.

“They came here and did a job on us. They are a young, hungry side who out-worked us, unfortunately.

“We missed the work rate which I believe our missing personnel would have provided.

“I now need to see a massive reaction from the boys ahead of next weekends FA Cup tie with Heybridge Swifts at Burrough Park.”
