Old Southendian Ladies Hockey first XI posted a huge statement of intent by beating Havering’s second string in an entertaining top of the table clash.
The Old Girls led at the break thank to a superbly worked goal, fashioned by Hattie Marden and smashed against the backboard by Anna Cooper.
The Seasiders negotiated a tough second period, creating the better of the few opportunities. And with five minutes remaining, they sealed the contest.
Beccy Withams sent a screamer high into the top left-hand corner of the net. Havering continued to battle but the result saw Old Southendian go two points clear at the top.
The Old Girls second XI came unstuck in a competitive clash with Waltham Forest’s third team.
A defensive error allowed the East Londoners to snatch an advantage. However, a strong second-half dispaly saw Margaret Downing follow up on a short corner to level the score.
But Waltham Forest was to clinch the points with a late strike.
Old Girls skipper, Ros Jackson, said: “We learnt a lot from this match. Our division is still wide open – we will bounce back next week more determined than ever.”
Meanwhile, the Old Southendian third XI endured a tough afternoon, going down by seven unanswered goals against a strong Havering 4th XI.
