Women across Essex celebrated International Women’s Day by attending a fitness-filled day at the Women Like Us festival.

Active Essex wanted to celebrate the women in Basildon through dancing, moving and inspiring. From Body Blitz and Kettlebells to Salsa and Clubbercise, the festival offered taster sessions for a range of activities and sports with the aim of encouraging women and girls to try out something new and be inspired to keep active.

The festival took place at The Basildon Lower Academy and sessions were run by a range of local organisations and This Girl Can Essex ambassadors to showcase the variety of fantastic opportunities available in the local community.

Festival-goer, Lauren Charles, said: “The festival was fantastic. I came along with some friends and enjoyed trying activities that I hadn’t done before. It was great to be a part of the festivals and take part with other like-minded individuals. I will definitely be coming to another festival!”

The Women Like Us festival supports the national This Girl Can campaign. We now have over 350 This Girl Can Essex ambassadors who inspire women in their local community to get active, meet new people and have fun. The ambassador programme is run by Active Essex and is part of their ambition to change 1 million lives.

Juliette Raison, Active Essex Relationship Manager for South West Essex said: “It was fantastic to see so many women come together for International Women’s Day, to try lots of different activities.

There was a real sense of community about the event with women motivating and inspiring one another along the way.”
