“International Women’s Day 2020 was celebrated on Sunday at a lively event presented by the charity ‘Welcome to the UK’ (W2UK) and held in the ballroom of the iconic Park Inn in Southend with financial support from Southend Council.
The theme was ‘Inspiring Women’ – focusing both on women who inspire us, and inspiring other women to reach their potential. About 65 people attended, who between them represented 15 countries, making it a truly international event.
The event was opened by Aline Clayson, trustee and chairwoman of Welcome to the UK, followed by W2UK founder and coordinator, Ilda Stafa.
The main speaker for the morning was Hélène Musso, life and confidence coach. Originally from France and now based in Chelmsford, she facilitated a number of interactive activities that got everyone in the room engaged and created opportunities that encouraged participants to speak out.
After lunch, the main speaker was Councillor Helen McDonald, who was accompanied by fellow local activists Kay Mitchell and Anne Jones. Her main aim for the day was to inspire participants to focus on what they could do within the Southend community and beyond.
W2UK is planning to hold a similar IWD event next year.
