Iron back on track

Braintree Town v Hampton & Richmond – Vanarama National League South – Rare Breed Meat Co. Stadium – Report

Braintree Town 3-1 Hampton & Richmond 1

Following back-to-back 3-0 defeats to Chelmsford City over the festive period, Braintree Town bounced back in style with a 3-1 win over high-flying Hampton & Richmond at the Rare Breed Meat Co. Stadium.

The Iron took the lead just after the half-hour mark when Adam Desbois misjudged Matt Ward’s powerful curling effort towards the top corner, with the keeper failing to hold onto the ball before it slipped into the net.

With the game moving into stoppage time, Ward’s low ball into the area was headed past Desbois into the bottom corner by former Spurs and Southend United striker Shaq Coulthirst to put Braintree 2-0 up at the break.

Just past the hour, following a corner, substitute Sam Dreyer’s header struck the crossbar before out of nowhere, the Beavers pulled one back in the seventy-third minute when Joshua Anifowose’s volley from outside the area evaded everyone before ending up in the back of the net.

With Braintree pushing forward and continuing to control the game, Coulthirst netted his second goal of the afternoon when he drilled home substitute Ben Watt’s cross to make it 3-1 in the sixth minute of stoppage time to seal the points and conclude the afternoon for Angelo Harrop’s men with a flourish.

Next up for Braintree Town is a trip to Twerton Park to play Bath City on Saturday, January 13 (3pm).
