Iron slip at Farnborough

Farnborough v Braintree Town – Vanarama National League South – Saunders Transport Community Stadium – Report

Farnborough 1-0 Braintree Town

Despite outplaying Farnborough for most of the match, Braintree Town were made to pay for numerous missed chances throughout as the Yellows came through to take the points with Aaron Kuhl netting their winner from the penalty spot in the seventy-fourth minute.

With last season’s player of the year Baris Altintop having been re-signed from Dartford and coming into the side as captain for his second Iron debut, left-back Lewis Miccio – who also joined the club from Oxford City earlier in the week, was named on the Iron substitutes bench by Angelo Harrop.

Braintree attacked from the start and were dominant from the off, with Aaron Blair firing wide of the upright just a minute in before Shaq Coulthirst headed over the bar just after.

Blair went close again in the thirteenth minute when following a corner, his effort from outside the box struck the crossbar.

Matt Ward was put through one-on-one only to be denied by Farnborough keeper Jack Turner before Alfie Payne, with an open goal in front of him skied the ball over from just a couple of yards out when it seemed easier to score.

With Farnborough looking far more competitive following the break – and the introduction of former Charlton Athletic and Northampton Town winger Ricky Holmes as sub – they were awarded a penalty in the seventy-fourth minute after Jack Sims fouled Michael Folivi in the box – with the Iron stopper also receiving a yellow card for the challenge.

Kuhl hammered the penalty home to make it 1-0 – the goal being only Farnborough’s second shot of the afternoon on target and despite Iron having several half chances near the end, the home side held on with ease to take the points.

Next up for Braintree Town is the visit of Chelmsford City to the Rare Breed Meat Co. Stadium on Boxing Day (3pm).
