Lokomotiv Plovdiv v Tottenham Hotspur – Lokomotiv Stadium – UEFA Europa League Second Round Qualifying – Thursday 5pm – Preview
It’s a case of a trip into the unknown for Jose Mourinho and his Tottenham Hotspur side as they head out to Bulgaria for a one-off UEFA Europa League Second Round Qualifying tie with Lokomotiv Plovdiv.
Spurs will be hoping to kickstart their season on a European front having disappointed and ultimately slipped to defeat in their opening Premier League match against Everton in N17 at the weekend.
“We are going there knowing it is black or white, there is no other option, you win or lose, you are in or out,” Mourinho explained.
“We go with the intention of being in the next round. I believe it is a good competition to develop my team and try to win it.
“I think Lokomotiv Plovdiv and Tottenham were both very unlucky with the draw. Lokomotiv could have a much easier opponent than us and we could also have a much easier opponent. As a seeded team, they could have much, much easier than Tottenham and unseeded teams, there were many with much less potential than Lokomotiv.
Mourinho added: “We are both in a difficult position. It is only one game, not two, with two games the situation would be different.
“With one match, one decision, everything is decided tomorrow, I think it is a difficult match and we are going to give them the respect they deserve from us.”
Meanwhile, the Lilywhite boss refused to be drawn on numerous rumours that Gareth Bale is in advanced talks with the club over a return to North London from Real Madrid: “No. That’s not my job to have contacts with agents. Honestly, I don’t want to comment on that and again especially regarding players that play for other clubs.”
