Jackett’s honeymoon over as O’s slip at home

Leyton Orient v Harrogate Town – Sky Bet League Two – Breyer Group Stadium – Report

Leyton Orient 0-2 Harrogate Town

Kenny Jackett’s Orient honeymoon is over after his side’s unbeaten start was ended abruptly, on Tuesday night, by plucky Harrogate, who took full advantage of the east Londoners’ sloppy defending.

Flat as a pancake Orient had no answer to first-half strikes from Luke Armstrong and debutant, Sam Ogie’s own goal. To cap a forgettable evening, Harry Smith fluffed a second-period penalty kick.

In this rearranged clash, Town’s positive start was rewarded, on eight minutes, when Armstrong bundled home, after home skipper, Darren Pratley, had been caught in possession.

Comfortably soaking up sporadic Orient pressure, the Yorkshire side went further ahead, on 31 minutes, when the unfortunate Ogie appeared to get the last touch, turning a Lewis Page set-piece past his own goalkeeper, under pressure from Armstrong.

The underworked former Southend keeper, Mark Oxley, was finally called into action six minutes from the turnaround, when Theo Archibald was at last able to beat his marker and crossed for Smith – scorer last Saturday at Carlisle – to plant a firm header, which the gloveman did well to gather cleanly, under pressure from on-loan, Tyrese Omotoye.

Facing a mountain to climb, Orient were thrown a 50th-minute lifeline when eagled-eyed referee, Carl Brook spotted a handball, from a Pratley drive, but Smith’s daisy-cutter spot-kick was easily gathered by Oxley.

Having yet to make a telling save, and already twice having picked the ball out of the back of the net, Lawrence Vigouroux did well to parry George Thomson’s 54th-minute stunning free-kick, as Harrogate looked to put the game out of sight.

Jackett then made a double substitution, hooking Ogie from his baptism of fire, with Tom James recalled and the lively Ruel Sotiriou on for an equally ineffective Omotoye.

And, an otherwise anonymous Dan Kemp was then denied from close range by Josh Falkingham, on 64 minutes, before blasting over from the ensuing flag-kick.
