Will Jacks ensured Surrey the upper hand on day two of their LV=Insurance County Championship Division One encounter with Essex at the Kia Oval.

Jacks was in majestic form with the bat, finishing unbeaten on 150 as the league leaders wrestled back control in a contest that has already swung both ways.

The Surrey right-handers’ 184-ball knock included ten 4s and eight 6s, helping the home side establish a first innings lead after they had floundered on 112/7.

Sam Cook and Shane Snater each took three wickets for the frustrated visitors. Earlier, Adam Rossington had reached three figures, while Simon Harmer scored fifty as Essex had recovered from 91/6 at lunch on day one to post 271. Daniel Worrall returned impressive figures of six for 56, while Kelmar Roach claimed 3/63.

At the close, the Surrey attack had made early inroads into the Essex top order. Worrall adding Alastair Cook and nightwatchman, Sam Cook took his already impressive haul, leaving Essex on 19/2, still 29 runs in arrears. Play resumes on Thursday at 11am.
