Old Southendian & Southchurch made Dukes League Cup progress following a seven-wicket victory in a high-scoring first-round tie with Old Brentwoods.

Having been invited to bat, Krupesh Patel led the way for the home side with a half-century, while Imran Qadir (43) and Umaad Sultan (38) were also amongst the runs – Matthew Austin with 3/76 for the Old Boys, while Ahsan Yousaf weighed in with 2/49.

Incredibly, the Garon Park club were to chase down their target with just over eight overs to spare.

Ahmed Khawaja provided the fireworks with a stylish unbeaten 142. The Pakistani allrounder faced 118 balls, scoring 26 fours and one 6s.

Ahsan Yousaf proved equally able with the bat, scoring a quite brilliant 124 off 115 balls with seventeen boundaries and two 6s. The pair putting together an incredible 283-run partnership.

Sultan took 2/63 in vain as his side slipped out of the competition at the first hurdle.
