Essex v Surrey – The Bob Willis Trophy – Day One – Cloudfm County Ground, Chelmsford – Close
Essex 253/7 (90.0 overs)
Essex won the toss and elected to bat
Feroze Khushi again displayed remarkable maturity, recording his maiden first-class fifty on day one of Essex’s Bow Willis Trophy encounter with Surrey at Chelmsford.
The exciting 21-year-old right-hander scored 45 during last week’s victory narrow over Kent. This time, he reached 50 off 84 balls, forging useful partnerships with Sir Alastair Cook and Paul Walter before he clipped Amar Virdi to Ryan Patel for 67.
Cook had reached 42, but edged Virdi’s third ball to Rikki Clarke, while Walter looked in good shape, but his time in the middle was curtained when Laurie Evans claimed a catch off a delivery from Clarke when he was on 52.
Earlier, right-arm medium-fast bowler, James Taylor – who joined Surrey from Derbyshire ahead of the season – claimed the wickets of Essex skipper, Tom Westley and Varun Chopra off successive deliveries.
The dangerous Virdi also finished with two wickets. Play resumes on Sunday at 11am.
