Leyton Orient v Newport County – Emirates FA Cup first round – Breyer Group Stadium – Saturday 3pm – Preview
Peter Kitchen believes the Emirates FA Cup first-round has come along at exactly the right time for Ross Embleton and his Leyton Orient side.
The O’s recent unbeaten sequence was brought to its conclusion by a strong Forest Green Rovers side during the week, although the East Londoners provided another honest performance, similar to those that have become customary over the past couple of weeks.
“I said before, realistically, we are not going to win every match,” Kitchen told Yellow Sport.
“The schedule has been pretty hectic. The performance was decent, but we did look a little jaded and not quite as fluent as in recent matches.
“Ross made a couple of changes, possibly due to fatigue, with Jamie Turley in for Josh Coulson and Josh Wright replacing Jobi McAnuff. I thought we held our own for much of the game against a promotion-chasing side who worked extremely hard to break our rhythm.
“I think the ten points from twelve ahead of the Forest Green game suggested we are not a million miles away. The cup game now offers Ross the opportunity to offer others some minutes and rest one or two.”
The O’s now face a Newport County side currently top of Sky bet League Two, but having slipped themselves during the week at Carlisle United.
“I think the O’s can take some encouragement into the game. We have an opportunity to regroup and review why fortunes have turned around of late.
“I’ve always been in favour of settled starting eleven in the league matches, but Ross now has a chance to have a look at one or two. I think the cup gives footballers a different mindset, particularly as both sides are aware that the game has to be won on the day.
“But we appear to have positively turned the corner. The Head Coach will use the game wisely, put Forest Green behind us and rebuild a little momentum ahead of a big derby with Colchester United next weekend.”
Peter Kitchen’s prediction: Leyton Orient 3-2 Newport County
Jeevesie’s prediction: Leyton Orient 1-0 Newport County
