Kitch wary of Rochdale’s plight

Leyton Orient v Rochdale – Sky Bet League Two – Brisbane Road – Tuesday (7:45pm) – Preview

Peter Kitchen has warned Leyton Orient against complacency when they face bottom-of-the-table Rochdale at Brisbane Road on Tuesday evening in a Sky Bet League Two clash of huge importance to both clubs.

The O’s moved eight points clear at the top following Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Walsall. Meanwhile, Rochdale helped both their own and Orient’s cause by holding promotion-chasing Northampton Town to a draw at the Crown Oil Arena.

“We need to treat Rochdale with the respect they deserve,” Kitchen told Yellow Sport.

“They are battling for their lives and will undoubtedly have taken heart from the draw with Northampton which ended a run of four defeats on the bounce.

Rochdale are five points adrift at the bottom and knows they need to start winning sooner rather than later. It is a banana skin for us. It is a mental challenge. I think our quality is clear to be seen, but to take them lightly would be a huge mistake.”

Kitchen continued: “In all honesty, it is a game everyone expects us to win. I expect us to win. But we need to find a bit more of a cutting edge. We need to put teams away. Be more ruthless. No doubt, Rochdale will defend in numbers. We might need to be patient. The last thing we want is to be chasing a game like this because you end up playing panic football the longer the game goes on.”

Kitchen concluded: “But we must focus on the positives, and there are plenty. We are in a strong position. Three points against Rochdale will put further pressure on the chasing pack. Stevenage have a tricky trip to Newport County, while Carlisle and Mansfield go head to head. It’s all about winning and keeping them at arms-length.

“Richie Wellens will realise that every match is like a cup final now. But that is a great pressure to have. Far better than that facing the Rochdale players right now.

“Everyone remembers the National League title campaign. Collectively, we must embrace it. Ride the waves of emotion and back this team to give us a trophy, come the end of the season.”

Peter Kitchen’s prediction: Leyton Orient 2-0 Rochdale
