Kitchen delighted with O’s fightback

Oxford United v Leyton Orient – Sky Bet League One – Kassam Stadium – Reaction

Oxford United 1-2 Leyton Orient

Peter Kitchen expressed his delight after Leyton Orient had climbed back on the proverbial Sky Bet League One horse to record a superb comeback victory over play-off contenders, Oxford United, at the Kassam Stadium.

The O’s – who were beaten by Burton Albion at Brisbane Road last time out – trailed to Tyler Goodrham’s first-half goal for the hosts. However, Ollie O’Neill and George Moncur struck after the restart to turn the game on its head and claim all three points for the East Londoners, whose boss, Richie Wellens, was sent to the stand for dissent in the closing stages of the contest.

“You can’t help but love this group of players,” Kitchen told Yellow Sport.

“They answer almost every question asked of them. Richie might have pulled a master stroke by admitting we are a little bit short. He has removed some of the pressure. Some of the expectations. It has given the players we have a bit of breathing space and time to focus.

“I fancied us to get something from the game, purely because Oxford play open football, which suits us. And so it proved. We have shown a bit of character to come from behind against a good team. Sure, some people will get a little bit excited again with the top six just six points away but let’s not get carried away.”

Kitchen added: “Richie saw red again towards the end of the match. I guess it is easy to question his discipline. Personally, I think he is a passionate man who wants the best for his team, his club and the supporters.

“We now face Blackpool in E10 on Tuesday. A victory will see us leapfrog the Tangerines, although this won’t be easy. They showed what they are capable of by thrashing promotion contenders Bolton by four goals to one at Bloomfield Road.

“But as is always the way with Orient, it is all about that rollercoaster ride I mentioned last week. Let’s enjoy what we have and see where it takes us.”
