Southend On Sea & EMT and Old Southendian & Southchurch’s first XI’s provided a thoroughly entertaining pre-season encounter at Southchurch Park, with the hosts salvaging the contest off the final ball.

Old Boys had posted 227/6 from their allocated 45 overs. Ahsan Yousaf led the way with a superb 116 while Matt Darvill (46) and Matt Austin (30) were amongst the runs – Ollie Maitland taking 3/41 and Romando Brown 2/44 – the home side giving seven bowlers a workout.

In response, Karanveer Shergill 94 was the SOSEMT highlight, while Matthew Mohan hit the final delivery across the rope to ensure the honours were even Skipper, Joe Sibbons looked in good nick for the home side, scoring 55.

Old Boys deployed eight bowlers, with Yousaf claiming 3/21 off six overs, while Austin took two and there was one for the talented youngster, Dylan Batt who conceded only seven runs in the process.

“It was a good outing and an opportunity for everyone to get some miles in their legs ready for the season,” Old Boys Head Coach and Captain, Andy McGarry told Yellow Sport.

“A great knock from AJ to start the season, and an important contribution from Matt Darvill on his debut, It was great to see young Dylan chip in with another excellent spell as well.

“All in all, some positives, and lots to learn. looking forward to next week when the competitive stuff gets underway.”
