Late agony for battling O’s

Lincoln City v Leyton Orient – LNER Stadium, Sincil Bank – Sky Bet League One – Report

Lincoln City 1-0 Leyton Orient

Leyton Orient’s play-off hopes suffered a major setback following a 1-0 defeat at the LNER Stadium with substitute Jovon Makama netting Lincoln City’s winner in the final minute of the match.

Richie Wellens made one change to his starting line-up following O’s 1-0-win Stevenage with Jordan Brown replacing Joe Pigott, who dropped to the bench.

Following a slow opening, the first chance of the game fell to the visitors after Tom James’ throw found Darren Pratley, only for Imps keeper Lukas Jensen to palm the former Bolton Wanders and Charlton midfielder’s stinging opportunist strike over the crossbar.

Brown’s shot fizzed just wide of the upright just before the half-hour mark, only for Ruel Sotiriou and Shaq Forde to then both shoot directly into Jensen’s arms shortly after.

Ollie O’Neill went close in the second half, heading Rob Hunt’s cross just inches over the crossbar before substitute Freddie Draper’s effort in the seventy-sixth minute – saved easily by Sol Brynn – was Lincoln’s first shot on target in the match.

Substitute Ethan Galbraith had a great chance to win it for the O’s near the end – only for his low twenty-yard effort to be magnificently tipped past the post by Jensen at full stretch.

With the game looking to be drifting towards an almost inevitable stalemate, Makama, who had only been introduced as sub two minutes earlier, reacted superbly to charge down an attempted clearance out of the O’s defence before bringing the ball under control and rifling a low strike past Brynn and into the bottom corner of the net to steal the points at the death for Lincoln.

Next up for O’s in Sky Bet League One is the visit of Peterborough United to the Gaughan Group Stadium on Monday (3pm).
