Late heartbreak for battling U’s

Colchester United v Wrexham – Sky Bet League Two – JobServe Community Stadium – Report

Colchester United 1-2 Wrexham

Colchester United remains embroiled in a desperate Sky Bet League Two relegation battle after promotion-chasing Wrexham came from behind to win a well-contested encounter at a sold-out JobServe Community Stadium.

The U’s battling qualities cannot be faulted. However, they slipped to only their third defeat since the appointment of Danny and Nicky Cowley, leaving them second from bottom with games fast running out.

The U’s gave their sizable audience a boost when John Akinde fired them ahead nine minutes after the interval. However, the lead lasted just eight minutes. Paul Mullin nodded the Welshmen level with his one-hundredth goal for the club before Max Cleworth headed a late winner to break Colchester’s hearts.
