LATEST: Killing of MP a terrorist incident say police

Police have declared the fatal stabbing of Sir David Amess MP on Friday October 15 a terrorist incident.

Sir David, 69, MP for Southend West, was holding a constituency surgery in Leigh-on-Sea when he sustained multiple injuries just after midday.

He received medical treatment at the scene but was confirmed dead three hours later.

A 25-year old man, said to be a British national of Somali descent, remains in custody.

The investigation into Sir David’s death is being led by the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command, which has now determined that the incident is terrorist related with “a potential motivation linked to Islamist extremism”.

Officers are carrying out searches at two addresses in the London area.
