Dan Lawrence finished the opening day unbeaten on three figures as Essex made a steady start to their LV=Insurance County Championship Division One encounter with Lancashire at the Emirates Old Trafford.

Lawrence’s 223-minutes at the crease gleaned 100 from 178 balls and included ten boundaries. Opening bat, Nick Browne also impressed, scoring 71 off 156 deliveries as the visitors made a satisfactory start.

Right-arm fast-medium, Tom Bailey was rewarded for his toil, returning figures of three for 36 from his seventeen overs, including the wicket of former England skipper, Alastair Cook, who was caught by wicketkeeper, Phil Salt off the penultimate ball of the ninth over.
