England Women v Italy Women – International Friendly – Estadio Nuevo Mirador – Report

England Women 5-1 Italy Women

The Lionesses completed their warm-weather training camp in Marbella after a thumping 5-1 win over Italy at the Estadio Nuevo Mirador with Lauren Hemp netting twice and further goals from Lotte Wubben-Moy, Ella Toone and Rachel Daly.

Arsenal defender Wubben-Moy nodded England into the lead in the first minute before Hemp’s double extended the lead to 3-0 with just over half an hour played.

Michela Cambiaghi pulled one back in first-half stoppage time but with the Lionesses continuing to dominate, Toone made it 4-1 in the sixty-ninth minute before fellow sub-Daly netted number five, ten minutes later.

The win, following on from the 7-2 thrashing of Austria on Friday proved to be another top class work out for the Lionesses and Sarina Wiegman will undoubtedly feel the games have been of great benefit to her as she continues her preparations for England’s Euro 2025 qualifying campaign later this year.

Coach Wiegman spoke to ITV Sport following the match: “I think the whole camp pleased me. We had the opportunity to play many players, basically, everyone except for Fran [Kirby], see what the level is, see players in some positions and the connection between players. When you have two wins like we have that’s really nice too.

“We are always working on it [goals from set-pieces], we had a little more emphasis on it. It’s really good to see it had some effect and hopefully, we can do that again.”

“You never know because things in football can change quickly. It gave us many answers to questions we had. We saw many players and played two good games, trained also and saw the U23s. There are many positives about this week.”
