Oxford United v Southend United – Kassam Stadium – Sky Bet League One – Saturday 3pm
Oxford United v Southend United – Preview:
With little sign of incoming activity, Southend United boss, Sol Campbell, looks likely to be reliant on his youthful, threadbare squad for their Sky Bet League One trip to in-form Oxford United on Saturday.
Blues have been linked with former Macclesfield Town duo, Theo Vassell and Emmanuel Osadebe, while goalkeeper, Ted Smith, was expected to link up with the struggling Roots Hall Stadium outfit. But with no imminent sign of those deals being concluded, Southend head to the Kassam Stadium with the same group that has lost five on the bounce and sit fifteen points adrift of safety.
Despite shipping three goals on his debut, Campbell could stick with on-loan Brentford goalkeeper, Patrik Gunnarsson – the 19-year-old prefered by the former Arsenal defender to Callum Taylor and Harry Seaden, who had deputised following Mark Oxley’s injury, sustained during the defeat to Coventry City a fortnight ago.
Striker, Matthew Rush, could come into Campbell’s plans following his hat-trick for the under 23’s at Harlow Town on Wednesday evening.
Blues have conceded eighty-two goals during the campaign – more than any other club in the EFL – and will undoubtedly face a tough task against an Oxford side that has won three on the bounce and won 4-0 at Roots Hall earlier in the season, despite barely getting out of first gear.
