Maher frustrated by Blues Trophy exit

Southend United v Hampton & Richmond – Isuzu FA Trophy Third Round – Roots Hall Stadium – Reaction

Southend United 2-2 Hampton & Richmond

(Hampton & Richmond won 4-2 on penalties)

Kevin Maher expressed his frustration after his Southend United side threw away a two-goal advantage before slipping out of the Isuzu FA Trophy at the third round stage as Hampton & Richmond progressed via a penalty shootout.

“It’s disappointing that we ended up in a penalty shootout in a game that we were in complete control of. They didn’t cause us any real problems,” the Blues boss bemoaned.

“When you’re 2-0 up you should go and see it out, or win 2-1 at the worst.

“In the first half, we kept the ball well, made them run, and their ‘keeper’s made some brilliant saves to be fair to him. In the second half, we got the goals.”

Maher added: “We wanted to go as far as we could so I’m bitterly disappointed to lose a game we never should have lost.

“The takeover is the big picture and we need it as soon as possible because we need bodies in.”
