Gateshead v Southend United – Vanarama National League – International Stadium – Reaction

Gateshead 1-1 Southend United

Harry Cardwell salvaged a share of the Vanarama National League spoils for Southend United at play-off contenders Gateshead, leaving boss, Kevin Maher waxing lyrical over his sides’ honest toil.

“It’s probably as good a result as last week was, for different reasons,” the Blues chief enthused.

“Gateshead look after the ball ever so well and they’re good tactically, but once we forced our game on them, we started to create more.

“Today was a different game, we had a great following but sometimes you’ve got to get results slightly differently. I’m glad we could give the supporters something to cheer. ’m sure a few will stay up here and enjoy their night.”

Harry Cardwell was back amongst the goals: “I’m pleased because he works ever so hard and leads the line brilliantly.

“He hasn’t had loads of chances recently, so to be in and around the six-yard box and for it to drop to him and finish, I was delighted for him.”
