Man admits to manslaughter in Westcliff

Detectives have secured justice for the family of James Avis after a man admitted killing him.

Thirty-five year-old Mr Avis died after being assaulted in Hainault Avenue, Westcliff, at around 10.35pm on Saturday September 25.

Radu Ciobanu, 24, of Kings Chase, Witham, was arrested shortly after and subsequently charged with manslaughter.

He appeared at Basildon Crown Court on Monday November 15 where he pleaded guilty.

He is due to be sentenced at the same court on Friday November 19.

Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Louise Metcalfe said: “James’ death was a needless and avoidable tragedy.

“Radu Ciobanu’s actions have caused James’ family a huge amount of grief.

“He has at least admitted his guilt and prevented them from re-living the ordeal through a trial.”
