Man saved from bridge in Southend

The actions of police officers and a quick-thinking member of the public have been praised after an operation to save a man from harming himself on a bridge in Southend.

Police received a call shortly after 1am this morning from a man in distress.

During the call, a passing member of the public spotted the man standing on the other side of a set of railings on a bridge over Queensway.

The member of the public managed to take hold of the man, with officers arriving seconds later to assist.

Due to concerns for the man’s safety on the bridge, officers secured him to the railings while continuing to hold him.

Medical teams assisted while Essex Fire and Rescue used specialist equipment to lift the man to safety.

He was left in the care of the ambulance service.
