Men convicted over disturbance at Rochford pub

Two men have been sentenced after an argument over a singer led to several people being assaulted at a pub in Rochford.

Officers were called to reports of a large disturbance outside the Horse and Groom in Southend Road at around 9pm on June 24, 2018.

It was reported that Bobby Loveday, 28, punched another man repeatedly following an argument over wanting the singer performing at the pub to continue.

When other people tried to intervene someone with a glass.

Carter made off from the scene following the incident, but was arrested in Queensland Avenue a short time later.

The 42-year-old, of St Cyrus Road, Colchester, admitted two counts of assault by beating in connection with an assault on a woman who had been punched in the face outside the pub, and a man who had been trying to calm the situation.

Following a trial at Basildon Crown Court, he was also found guilty of two counts of actual bodily harm (ABH) and one count of assault by beating.

He was found not guilty of attempted assault by beating.

Loveday, of Queensland Avenue, Rochford, pleaded to guilty to ABH.

At Basildon Crown Court on Friday January 10, Carter was given a 20 month jail term, suspended for two years. He was ordered to undergo rehabilitation treatment.

Loveday was sentenced to a 15-month jail term, suspended for 20 months. He was ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and pay £1,000 compensation and £1,000 court costs. He was also made subject of a five year restraining order.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Victoria Leese said: “Between them, Bobby Loveday and David Carter assaulted a group of people over a trivial matter where they wanted the singer to continue past her agreed work hours.”

“Neither men showed any remorse and both tried to deny their involvement when they were initially interviewed.”

“I hope this sentencing provides their victims with some closure and both Carter and Loveday use this as an opportunity to reflect on their actions.”
