Southend United v Cheltenham Town – Sky Bet League Two – Roots Hall Stadium – Saturday 3pm – Preview
Back-to-back Sky Bet League Two draws have handed Mark Molesley and his struggling Southend United side something of a base to build up as they attempt to clamber away from the foot of the EFL.
However, the Blues inexperienced group will again be put to the test when Cheltenham Town are the visitors to Roots Hall Stadium.
Blues haven’t won any of their eight matches in all competitions to date, while fifth-placed Cheltenham had picked up nine points ahead of Tuesday evenings surprise defeat at the hands of Grimsby Town. Nevertheless, Molesley insisted Southend are getting closer to where he, and the fans, ultimately want them to be.
“We’re trying to implement a new philosophy. The longer we go on, the more comfortable we will be in that. But, at the moment it’s very much a steep learning curve for us.”
“And we’re finding out the cruel side of the game at the moment. We can’t give up and you certainly saw the fighting spirit out there this afternoon,” he explained after Exeter City had snatched a stoppage-time point last weekend.
Hours on the training pitch appear to be reaping some benefits, with Moseley adding: “I thought we defended really well today. Unfortunately, the first goal we concede is from our own error. The good thing that’s controllable. A lot of goals we have shot ourselves in the foot.”
“The pleasing thing for me is we’re getting better week in week out and we’ve still got some vital players to come back as well.
“We can’t get too down, we can’t feel sorry for ourselves and you can see the mentality of this group, the attitude, the work rate.
“I wish our fans were here to see that because they are working their socks off at the moment. We’ve got to keep believing in ourselves and I’m sure those draws will soon turn into wins.”
