Molesley frustrated as Blues are held by Stags

Mansfield Town 1-1 Southend United

A few weeks ago anyone connected with Southend United would have snapped your hand off for a share of the spoils from a potentially tricky road trip.

However, despite extending their unbeaten Sky Bet League Two sequence to four matches, Blues boss, Mark Molesley was left frustrated that his side hadn’t recorded a third-straight victory which would have lifted them from the bottom of the table and kept them within a point of safety.

Indeed, Blues led thanks to James Olayinka’s superb strike shortly before the half-hour mark, But despite a dogged display, hosts, Mansfield Town, salvaged a point thanks to Jordan Bowery’s goal eleven minutes from time.

“Tough one really as we were 1-0 up and we’ve defended so well for large periods of the game,” Molesley explained.

“We can try and call it football but you can see the conditions out there, there wasn’t much football being played. It was about being organised, resolute, doing the dirtier side of the game all day.

“We went a little bit sloppy in one area, a free-kick against Greg Halford for I don’t know what, they’ve delivered in our box and we’ve not
recovered well on that one and it’s ricocheted and fell to their guy.”

Molesley couldn’t fault the effort from his charges, who are beginning to look a little more resolute defensively: “It was a tough, battling performance and again, I have to praise the boys who’ve shown all the credentials we need for this fight in really tough conditions.

“If we had any rain it would have got called off straight away, it was wet, soddy, muddy, it was like a cabbage patch out there. I thought the boys showed that resilience.”

With Barrow beating Cheltenham Town by three unanswered goals at Holker Street, Southern find themselves three points adrift at the foot of the table. They return to Sky Bet League Two action on Saturday, December 26, when they take on Colchester United at Roots Hall Stadium (1pm).
