Molesley’s Blues a work in progress

Charlton Athletic 2-3 Southend United

Mark Molesley insisted there is still work to do despite overseeing his Southend United side recover a two-goal deficit to overcome Charlton Athletic by the odd goal in five in a behind closed doors warm-up match played at the Addicks’ Sparrows Lane training ground.

Josh Davison’s penalty and a superb strike from George Lapslie handed the south-east Londoners a 2-0 advantage. However, Blues hit back through Brandon Goodship, Eren Kinali and Isaac Hutchinson, much to the satisfaction of the new chief

“It was a great workout for us which is what you need in pre-season,” Molesley told

“I think it exposed a few things which is what we want to do. We’ve got to open everything up and look at ways we can improve, and then there was a big shift in the game in the second half where we managed to come out on top and score some goals.

“We got lots out the game. It’s pre-season, it’s building blocks and we’re seeking ways of improvement all the time.

“There’s plenty of areas we can still improve but there were plenty of positives to come out the game as well.”

Meanwhile, a young Southend United side went down by two goals to one against Isthmian League North outfit, Canvey Island, at Park Lane.
