Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea – Carabao Cup – Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – Tuesday, September 29 (7:45pm) – Preview
Three games over five days in different competitions has left Jose Mourinho somewhat flabbergasted with the schedule handed to his Tottenham Hotspur side.
Indeed, speaking ahead of the Lilywhites Carabao Cup derby with old adversaries Chelsea, the Portuguese chief suggested it’s a near-impossible situation for his side and prioritising might be the only option for the North Londoners with Maccabi Haifa arriving for a UEFA Europa League play-off tie on Thursday evening.
“What would you do in my position?” the Spurs boss asked.
“I would like to fight for the Carabao but I don’t think I can.
“We have a game on Thursday that gives us not as much money as the Champions League but the group phase of the Europa League gives us a certain amount that for a club like us is very important.
“It’s a competition with a possible group phase that gives us a good chance to go through to the next knockout stage so this game on Thursday is very important for us.”
Mourinho has little choice other than to rotate throughout the week. Heung-Min Son’s hamstring injury rules him out for the foreseeable future. Dele Alli could feature against the Blues after his recent exile from Tottenham’s Premier League matchday squad.
Sergio Reguilón might be handed his debut after moving to N17 from Real Madrid. Toby Alderweireld, Moussa Sissoko, Tanguy Ndombele, Erik Lamela and Joe Hart are also in contention to start against Frank Lampard’s side.
