Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur – Old Trafford – Premier League – Wednesday 7:30pm
Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur – Preview:
JOSE MOURINHO looked ahead to his return to Manchester United but insisted the reunion will be all about helping his Tottenham Hotspur side continue their recent revival under his stewardship.
Mourinho parted company with United almost a year ago and has seem revitalised following that spell away from the dugout. Indeed, both Tottenham and their manager appear to have rediscovered their mojo of late, with the gaffer clearly relishing his return to the limelight.
“I feel good – I like to play big matches, I like to play against the best teams and that is the most important thing,” the Spurs chief enthused.
“Going back to Old Trafford is to go back to a place where I was happy. I can say that I was happy. I have a great relationship with Manchester United supporters.
“I went back as a pundit which is a different perspective. I was really humbled by such a beautiful reception.
“Tomorrow I go back as the coach of the team that is going is try to beat Manchester United and that maybe gives a different perspective.”
On Tottenham’s prospects of closing the gap on those occupying the top-four Champions League places, Mourinho added: “There are things we cannot control, the opponent’s results. We did our job, we won two matches – then we cannot control.
“Chelsea lost six points, Arsenal lost four. We are not in control with this kind of situation.
“Imagine we win all our matches but Chelsea also wins, we would be the same twelve points difference. That is something we cannot control and that’s the problem when you are in a bad position.”
Spurs head to the North-West without injured quartet, Ben Davies, Erik Lamela, Michel Vorm and Hugo Lloris. Meanwhile, Paul Pogba is still absent for United but Scott McTominay is expected to be available to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
