Mourinho praises Argentine duo

Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Middlesbrough – Reaction

JOSE MOURINHO heaped praise on his Argentinian hitmen, Giovani Lo Celso and Erik Lamela after the pair bagged early goals which ultimately lead to the downfall of Middlesbrough at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Lo Celso profited from a poor pass from Boro goalkeeper, Tomas Mejias, to open the scoring in the second minute, while Lamela dance through fourteen minutes later to all but seal Tottenham’s Emirates FA Cup progress with a solo second.

George Saville’s late strike ensured an uncomfortable late ride for the Lilywhites. Meanwhile, Mourinho measured a couple of ‘La Albiceleste’ legends against which to measure his matchwinners.

“Do you want me to call them Ardiles and Villa? They played very well. Ardiles and Villa would not be ashamed of them for sure,” Mourinho enthused.

“They played very well. The team played very well, especially in the first half.”

Mourinho acknowledged that Boro boss, Jonathan Woodgate, rallied his side, adding: “The second half, we started ok but then gave some sloppy reactions to let them feel their way back into the game.

“Jonathan was not sleeping, he was awake, he was reading the game. He brought on Gestede alongside Fletcher and they started playing long balls, second balls.

“They scored the goal and we had to defend. But the majority of the game our energy was there. We should have scored more goals and killed the cup tie”

The Spurs chief added: “I am happy with Lamela and Gio. Lamela was out for so long, he has been coming back step by step. Playing twenty-minutes here, half an hour against Liverpool and ninety, here – you could see his fitness is coming.

“And Gio again has been step by step – He was so so good against Liverpool and so so good here again. I am happy with the boys – they played with intensity, and I am happy with the result, obviously.”
