West Ham United 1-1 Aston Villa – Reaction
David Moyes reflected upon a satisfactory conclusion to West Ham United’s Premier League campaign but was left with little doubt that his side need to positively push on come the new season.
The Hammers finished an extended 2019/20 term with a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa at the London Stadium, a result which secured the Midlanders top-flight future after they’d returned to action after the lockdown looking certain for the drop.
Jack Grealish lashed Villa ahead six minutes from time. However, Andriy Yarmolenko’s effort deflected off the same player just over sixty seconds later to conform a share of the spoils and sixteenth place for the East Londoners.
“I am thrilled for how well our players have done,” the Scotsman enthused.
“We didn’t play as well today as we have done but it was always going to be a tight game and thank goodness our players took us to a situation where we didn’t need to consider today’s game as much as we would have done.
“From that point of view, I am pleased with the players. They have done really well. Their performances against Chelsea here, getting a point at Manchester United. It is only praise for the players.”
Moyes insisted that there was a platform to build upon next season, adding: “I think we’ve set better standards, some of the young players have really shown what they are capable of and we are looking forward to how good they can become and the future ahead with them.
“We have got five or six really talented boys around the team, we’ve got some experienced players as well so I am looking forward to seeing how they go. Hopefully, we can pick it up and get on with it.”
