Colchester United 0-2 Salford City

Hayden Mullins provided an honest assessment of his Colchester United sides’ performance after they’d slipped to a third Sky Bet League Two defeat in four against Salford City.

“We deserved exactly what we got today and that was nothing,” the U’s chief bemoaned after first-half goals from Brandon Thomas-Asante and Tom Elliott saw the visitors comfortably over the line.

“I don’t think we really forced any kind of pressure on them, to the point where we looked like breaching them at any point.

“We can’t let teams come and dictate to us at home.

“We’ve got to be on the front foot and be aggressive in what we want to try and do.

Mullins added: “I thought Salford’s chances before they scored might have sparked us into life a little bit but it wasn’t to be.

“We didn’t start well at all.

“They got their two goals which they fully deserved.

“The reaction to conceding the first goal wasn’t good enough and we conceded again.

“We changed the shape after half-time but it was an off day for us.

“I just thought that the way they started and the way we started was the key to the game today – that did the damage.

“I think the performances, in general, this season have been very, very good.

“The first 30 minutes cost us and after that, I don’t think there was much to shout about.

“It was a real off day for us and it’s one that we’ll put to the back of it and move on from.”
