No play was possible on day two of Essex’s LV Insurance County Championship encounter with Nottinghamshire due to persistent rain.

Half-centuries from Lyndon James, skipper Steven Mullaney and Joe Clarke had given Nottinghamshire the edge on day one – Peter Siddle with 3/76 and Shane Snater, 2/35 the pick of the Essex attack.

Umpires Ian Blackwell and Neil Mallender eventually called time just before 4pm with sizable puddles having formed in areas of the ground. Play resumes on Saturday at 11am.
