Nottinghamshire v Essex – LV Insurance County Championship – Trent Bridge – Summary

Essex 99 and 194

Nottinghamshire 323

Nottinghamshire won the toss and elected to bat

Nottinghamshire won by an innings and 30 runs

Essex’s worrying early-season form continued as they suffered an innings defeat against resurgent Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

The champions were in trouble from the start – Nick Browne (53) and Dan Lawrence (14) the only Essex batsmen to reach double figures – right-arm medium-fast bowler, Luke Fletcher taking 6/24 as the visitors were skittled for just 99.

A stylish knock of 117 from Nottinghamshire skipper, Steven Mullaney, compiled from 160 balls and including twenty boundaries ensured that the hosts’ very much held the upper hand. Lyndon James passed fifty, while Haseeb Hameed (49) and Stuart Broad (41) helped Notts to 323 – Shane Snater with career-best figures of 7/98, keeping Essex’s slim chance alive.

Nick Browne hit his second half-century of the match as the visitors’ looked to claw their way back, while Alastair Cook contributed 35 and Paul Walter 30, but despite a lost day due to inclement weather Notts wrapped up a comfortable victory with Lyndon James taking 4/51 and Dane Paterson 3/41, leaving Essex with a single success from their opening five matches.

Essex returns to LV Insurance County Championship action on Thursday, May 13-16 when Derbyshire visit the Cloudfm County Ground (11am).
