Old Boys are back with emphasis on youth

Old Southendian & Southchurch Cricket Club return to training this week with extra emphasis on the development of players through their impressive youth section.

Adult net sessions get underway on Wednesday evening at the Old Boys Garon Park home, while youth training begins on Friday, April 23.

“We are looking forward to welcoming the youth back to cricket after a long winter with very little sport,” Youth Cricket Director, Henry Williams told Yellow Sport.

“It’s been especially difficult for their age group as they haven’t able to see a lot of their mates. Hopefully, a good long cricket season will provide a boost for them all.

“It’s a bonus that we have great facilities at Garon Park to host youth training and matches.”

Williams offered an insight into some of the specialised training organised for keen young cricketers, adding: “We have plenty of cricket for all ages with our successful All-Stars programme beginning on May 14.

“All-Stars is aimed at 5 to 8-year-olds and is a brilliant way to get kids into cricket, regardless of their ability. This runs alongside our Colt’s training on a Friday night at Garon Park.

“The Colt’s sessions will be up and running very soon – we start adult training this week – we hope to be playing some youth matches very soon.

“We have a super friendly and committed coaching team at Old Southendian and welcome any new players with open arms. Hopefully, we are in for a full season of cricket which can be enjoyed by everyone.”
