Old Southendian v Wakering Sports – Senior League Cup Final – Heybridge Swifts FC- Report

Old Southendian 5-3 Wakering Sports (aet)

Altan Ali complimented his Old Southendian side after they recovered a two-goal deficit to win a pulsating Senior League Cup final against an impressive Wakering Sports outfit at Heybridge Swfts’ Scraley Road ground.

“The boys capped on the season magnificently by lifting a trophy,” the Old Boys boss told Yellow Sport.

“To go twenty-two matches without defeat merits something. I’m glad we’ve managed to turn a good season into a memorable one.”

First-half goals from Ciaran Sweeney and Connor Fardyga had given the villagers a 2-0 lead at the break. However, substitute Nathan Elgie reduced the arrears after the restart before further strikes from Matt Tonking and Elgie turned the game on its head.

But Sports weren’t about to throw in the towel and sent the game into extra-time thanks to a late equaliser from Jack Woodham.

Elgie’s fellow substitute, Jack Mead restored the Old Boys advantage before leading marksman Mitch Ali completed the scoring in what was a truly memorable occasion.

“Nathan came on and changed the game,” Ali told Yellow Sport.

“We expected a difficult game and we got one. Fair play to the Wakering guys. They were excellent.

“But we have tried to make games all about us. We were very determined. To come back from 2-0 down and win the cup says everything about this group.

“I’m now looking forward to pre-season and another shot at winning the league.”
