Old Boys edge it for derby delight

Old Southendian v Catholic United – Essex Olympian League Premier Division – Garon Park Report

Old Southendian 2-1 Catholic United

Old Southendian maintained their single-point advantage at the Essex Olympian League Premier League summit following a hard-fought 2-1 derby victory over Catholic United at Garon Park.

Callum Ludliam and Mitch Ali netted either side of the interval for the home side, while Catholic’s newly recruited midfielder Dan Rogers scored a late penalty for the visitors.

“It’s another three points which continue to ask questions of Rayleigh Town,” Old Boys boss, Altan Ali, told Yellow Sport.

“I thought it was a dominant performance. Of course, being a deby you know that Catholic United are not simply going to throw in the towel, and so it proved.

“I’m probably sounding like a broken record with my ‘control the controllable’ quotes – but that’s all we can do.

“We are in the title race. We need results to go our way, but we continue to show signs of the maturity required by a squad capable of challenging for honours.”
