Old Boys hit by five-star Shenfield

Old Southendian v Shenfield AFC – Essex Olympian League Premier Division – Garon Park – Report

Old Southendian 3-5 Shenfield AFC

Threadbare Old Southendian were beaten in an eight-goal Essex Olympian League Premier Division thriller by Shenfield AFC at Garon Park.

The Old Boys were missing a number of their regular squad: “We knew it was going to be tough,” boss Altan Ali told Yellow Sport.

“But having said that, we started the game well, going a goal up through Mitch Ali’s free-kick.

“We struggled with Shenfield’s counter-attacking style which resulted in them turning the game around. But Sam Jones got us level after Charlie Carter had brilliantly set him up.

“The message at half-time was very much to keep it tight and keep the shape. Within a couple of minutes, we were 3-2 up – Ed Gould scoring after Mitch had created the opening.

But the home side was unable to sustain their advantage: “We imploded from there. We conceded three further goals and appeared to be lacking fitness and made individual errors.

“All in all, I’m disappointed because it’s two defeats on the spin after we’d made a good start to the season. We have a big derby away at Catholic United next week. It’s one we will set out to do our very best in.”

On Carter’s performance, Ali added: “He’s 19-years-old, played extremely well and is a promising player.”

Ben Carroll, Mitchell Day, Charley Heatley, Sam Lock and Alex Tredgett netted the Shenfield goals. They move up to eighth place – a point behind Old Boys in the Premier Division table.
